After a lot of thought and consideration, I have decided to suspend the ordering of Roaming Penguins during this time. I have absolutely enjoyed sending these little guys out into the world these last two years, but it's time for me to take a break and relax with other projects.

Currently I do not plan on stopping permanently. However, I don't have a set idea on how long the hiatus will last. I will take more time to update this blog and will make an announcement on here when I feel ready to take orders again.

I really appreciate everyone's understanding and patience and kind words! This project means so much to me and I look forward to revisiting it again with new energy in the future!

(if you have already ordered a penguin, don't worry! I am filling the orders I have as usual :) )

What Can I Say? The Roamers Love Christmas!

Our favorite little hat trick of Roamers (all three have met their humans!), from our favorite Pens Twins, Kaitlin and Nicole :)

Nicole and I have a few photos from our winter festivities. First, our trio of Roamers wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year under our tree on Christmas Eve. The following pair of pictures document our yarn boys taking advantage of the freezing weather to strike up a Winter Classic of their own on our little backyard pond.

We've Done It Again!!!

I am very happy to announce that I am about to send ANOTHER $1,000 check to the Mario Lemieux Foundation!!

I say it a lot, but I never imagined this project would be so huge.....I was hoping to send *maybe* $500 when this all began. And now we're on our way to the next $1,000....amazing!!

But getting to write a big check every once in awhile is only one of the perks for me. Your e-mails and pictures truly make my day! I love how people have embraced the Roamers and you guys are really creative with your stories and places you take your penguins! And for those that think "well, there's nowhere really neat to take my Roamers", let me tell you....the pictures of them buckled into the front seat of the car, sitting in front of the tv watching a game, or hanging out at a restaurant are some of my faves :) Of course, I will admit, seeing the Penguin players with the yarn boys is a special thrill. It means so much to me that you guys take the time during your very brief interlude with the guys to get a Roamer in there for a picture. Keep up the good work!

I am also happy to announce that the waiting list is dwindling. Oh, I'm still getting orders every week, but it's slowed down just enough that I'm getting them out faster than orders are coming in. Right now the list is 37 penguins long (at one time it was 120!). It will be nice for me to be able to answer order e-mails with a "your penguin will be ready in about 2 days" instead of "you're going to have to be patient for about 6 months"! I am almost to the 400 completed penguins mark.....all I can say is AMAZING!

So give yourselves a huge pat on the back! It's cliche, but this project and those checks would not exist without you! You guys ROCK!!!

Roaming for 22 Hours!

Kylee packed up Sidney Penguin and road tripped to Pittsburgh for Christmas of 2008. Looks like Sid made himself right at home for the trek!

I just wanted to send you some pictures from when Sidney Penguins dared the 22 hour trip up to Pittsburgh. They are from when I was in the car and obviously was really bored. I ended up watching Sidney Crosby On the Ice and Beyond like 7 times on the way up because I had nothing else to do (not that I minded it!!!)

Roaming to the Olympics

A bunch of Roaming Penguin Mamas have decended on Vancouver and they brought their Roamers with them!

Looks like the boys had lots of fun at the aquarium....and I'm sure they will be glued to the Canada/Slovakia game tonight (and the Canada/U.S. game on Sunday!!!)

Thanks to Kylie, Mer, and Lauren for taking their yarn boys to the Winter Games :) Another proud moment for this Penguin Mama....

Marc-Andre Penguin flew from Nashville, Tennessee to Washington, Pennsylvania for a trip to Conneaut Lake, PA (my Grandparents) for Thanksgiving.

He really dug our American traditions and ate a big plate full of food. When he saw the snow outside, it reminded him of Canada and decided to go out and play in it.

Seeing as how we were in Conneaut Lake, he begged me to take him to see the lake. He almost jumped right in, but I caught him just in time.

Marc-Andre Penguin came back home and hung out and watched the games for a while and then it was time to put him under the tree to give to my oldest brother for Christmas. My brother is in the Navy and is a really big Pens fan (in fact, he got me interested)! Little did I know that there was a Sidney Penguin awaiting me under the tree!

They played some serious hockey for a while only stopping to take a quick picture together in front of the tree.

They had lots of fun over the holidays and are excited for some adventures!!!

P.S. My brother will be stationed in Hawaii for two to three years. So hopefully there will be some thrilling (and warm) adventures to come!

Merry Christmas from Penguin Production Headquarters (Dallas Division)!!

Penguin Production Headquarters has temporarily moved from Nashville to Dallas (well, ok, Ft. Worth really) for the next week. And I am THRILLED to report that I got what I've always wanted for Christmas (well, ok, besides a husband).....a white Christmas! It was beautiful as it fell yesterday and I believe we ended up with about 3 inches. And did I mention we're in TEXAS?? Josey-kitten, my mom and I drove out here Wednesday night....and I'm glad we did with the impending snow. We'll be here until New Years and taking in two Stars games while I'm here.

Anyhow, I hope that everyone out in Roamer Land has a great, great Christmas (or a Happy Hanukkah!) and a fun time ringing in 2010!!

I am now officially a year behind! Perhaps my New Year's Resolution next month will be to blog more (of course, at the rate I'm going, I won't make resolutions until sometime in September). Anyways, please sit back and enjoy Ali's trip home for Thanksgiving.....from last year :)

Give These Girls A Raise!!

You all may remember that twins Nicole and Kaitlin introduced the first Roamer to his human counterpart. Well, Max Penguin was jealous, so another introduction was made (and I will hunt down those pictures in my overflowing e-mail box soon!). Sidney Penguin just couldn't stand to be left out.....and I will let Kaitlin take it from here.....

I'm very happy to let you both know that my sister, Nicole, and I recently achieved what we'd like to call our "Roaming Penguin Hat Trick" -- all three of our Roamers are now signed by their respective players! And yes, that means Marc-Andre Penguin (Nov. 3, 2008), Max Penguin (Dec. 1, 2008), AND a certain Sidney Penguin... ;)

Sidney Penguin met his human counterpart today after the boys' game day skate. Nicole and I arrived at the Igloo at about noon (we cheated because we now live at Duquesne University, less than ten minutes away on foot) and stood along the green fence just outside of Gate 2 alongside a HUUUUUUGE crowd. I was certain that hardly anyone on the roster would approach this unusually large crowd, but I was soon proven wrong. A young hockey team, the Peterborough Petes (Jordan Staal's team from his younger years), was in town, and some of the guys couldn't resist visiting them. Tyler Kennedy walked right up to the crowd and made his way down the line, then Ruslan Fedotenko followed suit. Jordan Staal and Eric Godard then walked to their cars, but when the young hockey players were escorted into the parking lot, Staalsy paid a visit to his former team... and that's when I noticed Sidney Crosby walking towards the group. I tapped Nicole (he's her favorite player), and we watched as he signed autographs for the boys and posed for photos. Then he also walked to the long line of fans and proceeded along the fence. I was stunned, because I hadn't thought for a moment that Sid would approach such a sizable group. I put my jersey aside so that I could document Nicole holding out her Sidney Penguin for Sid to sign. Said documentation has been uploaded to my YouTube account, and here's the link:

Notes: --The woman following him is a Penguins employee. She set the rules for how long Sid signed for the crowd, and maintained control.

--Sid initially missed Nicole because he was in a conversation with a fan, and Nicole wasn't holding SP over the fence. She didn't want to risk dropping him (although, if she HAD dropped SP over the fence, wouldn't it have been something if Sid picked it up?? :) ).

--The quality is awful because it was recorded by my anxious self using my digital camera...

-- The first two attached photos are of Sid meeting the Peterborough Petes. The third is apparently a look at Sid's thighs... taken by Nicole. The fourth is our RPHT. And last is a screenshot of SC and SP. :)

So there you have it. Sidney Crosby met Sidney Penguin today... and Mama G., Nicole G., and myself have an unofficial "Roaming Penguin Hat Trick!"

Letters and Banners and.....Snow??

As I mentioned, I talked to the wonderful folks at the MLF and last week I received my letter! Nancy included a copy of the original sent......I have to think maybe my mailman is a Mario fan and snagged the letter :) There will be more of these to come as we inch toward the next $1,000. I need to look over the financials.....I think we might be over $500 (in hand)....

I had almost forgotten that last night's game was the home opener with the raising of the banner....so glad I tuned in early! All the Roamers who are waiting to head toward their respective new homes wanted to watch the ceremony. There was a collective "Ahhhhhh" from the group...

There may have been some tears shed as well.... ;)

We have finally arrived at my favorite time of the year. Not only is hockey in full swing, but I just love fall in general (and Nashville's weather is pleasantly autumn-like this year!). It's the time of year where I start to wonder "will we get snow this winter?" (I love snow. Like, a lot.). So I thought I would share some pictures from Carlie from last winter in order to put the bug in Mother Nature's ear that I and Sidney Penguin sure would like to see the white stuff in a few months ;)

Here i go with my pictures again! Lol! I'm going to attach some pictures of S.P. and J.P. in the first snow in Buffalo.:) I didn't even think to do that and my mom is like,"Are you going to take pictures of the first snow with those. . .penguins?!" And i got a big smile and went out there!:) And the one is of my sign i made. In honor of the new commercial i made it say,"A Great Day For WOOOOOOOOO!!!" Lol! And i put next to the sign my puck that Cooke tossed me and this other puck with a picture of Sidney on it and an 87.:)

We love snow almost as much as Stephanie does!

Roamers Go To Camp!

Pens training camp started last weekend and the Big Pens weren't the only ones in the house!

Thanks so much to Lexie (and her mom, Tiffany) for these great photos! Seeing Roamers in the hands of the players is absolutely unreal to me. This is Kris Letang's second Roamer encounter (first one was back in February), so, according to Lexie, "he already knew about them" :) Ummmm. Wow. I'm all vklempt just thinking about it!!

"They Are Super Cute!"

After a unanimous vote for me calling the MLF to see if they got the check, I finally got around to it today. And I am thrilled to report that, not only did they receive our check, they love the Roamers!

I spoke to Nancy, the Executive Director (aren't I special?). I simply told her that I had sent a check in March but hadn't gotten confirmation that they got it. She looked me up in their system and said "Oh wait! Are you the one that made the penguins?" Can I just tell you all that, at this point, she could have told me they hated them and I wouldn't have heard her cause I was just so thrilled that she made that connection!

But, don't worry, she went on to tell me that they passed the little guys all around the office and that they loved them! She proceeded to apologize a thousand times for me not getting a letter. Though, really, I was just so giddy that they thought the Roamers were "super cute"! She asked me for my address and we discovered that they had my street name misspelled in their database (Treutland is not exactly a common name...). I really do believe that's where the mix-up came in. My post office is very unforgiving. If you address something to "Treutland Street" instead of "Treutland Avenue", it will not get to me. Grrrr.....

Anyhow, I told her that I was still going strong and that one of our yarn boys was in the hands of Kris Letang only days earlier (pictures coming!!). And I did hint that everyone would just be thrilled if she could take some pics of the boys around their office. Hopefully we might see some soon!

So, I'm glad I called them and Nancy was extremely wonderful to talk to! I am just so excited that they really know about the project and I can't wait to send them another check!! (I think we're about halfway there :) )

Next up: Roamers are enjoying this preseason almost as much as the rest of us!

So I'm writing this post to get your thoughts on the subject....

I sent the MLF a check back in March. It was cashed in April. I haven't heard anything from them. I even sent an e-mail back in July to just say "Hey. Just wanted to know if you got our donation". Nothing.

I am not looking for a parade in my honor or anything....I would just like to know that everything got to them ok (I sent three Roamers with the check as well). I worked for a non-profit and we were required to send thank you letters for tax purposes. They were mail merge form letters that our donation computer program just spit out...all I had to do was click "print".....

So, thoughts? Ideas? Comments? I don't want to keep bugging them. And, of course, I will continue sending checks because that's what this project is all about. I guess I'm just a little disappointed I haven't heard anything. Am I making too big of a deal out of this? Or should I book a flight to Pittsburgh and give them the what for? (hee!)

We Had Christmas in July....Now Thanksgiving In August!

In case no one has noticed by now, I'm not so on-the-ball about posting on here. And it isn't for lack of stuff to post! And I promised in my last Penguin Update that I would get something up here....I will not let September come before I do!

So here are pictures that Nicole and Kaitlin sent in around Thanksgiving last year. They took two of their Roamers with them to NYC (with one staying home to keep Mom company). And I had to include their little Happy Thanksgiving picture because it still makes me laugh :)

Nicole and I just thought we'd send our Thanksgiving well-wishes to you and everyone at The Show. :) Our Roamers have a little something to say, too. ;) The photo is attached. We also have pics of our weekend trip to NYC, for whenever you might care to post them.

Nicole and I recently embarked on a two-day field trip to New York City with our Japanese Club from school. When our Roamers heard that there would be lots of sushi to eat, they begged to come! We brought Sidney Penguin and Marc-Andre Penguin with us. (Max Penguin stayed home to keep our mom company. ;) ) I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Our Roamers were excited to be on the bus after waking up at two in the morning to leave for NYC.

Later that day, we stopped in New Jersey to shop at a Japanese marketplace. Our Roamers enjoyed the beautiful NYC skyline.

That evening, we dined in a Japanese karaoke bar. SP helped himself to a whole platter of sushi!

While we drove through Times Square, the yarn boys were dazzled by the glittering lights and Christmas decorations.

SP and MAP enjoyed sight-seeing late at night on the bus.

The next day, we happened to see the NHL store, and it is currently decorated for Christmas! You might be able to see that suspended high above the door is a red hockey skate which doubles as a stocking, stuffed with ornaments and hockey sticks. Directly below that, out of view, is a Christmas tree wrapped in golden lights - and trimmed to look like the Stanley Cup!

The girls have so much fun with their Roamers! The boys recently helped them move to college. I hear that the little guys are very helpful with the studying! We have quite a few of them helping their friends through the University life....

Roamers In My Home State!

Jaime is from my home state of Missouri. So it always makes me giddy to see the Roamers travel around the Show Me State :)

My penguins went on a trip to southern MO with me, and I took some pictures. :) My friends there have some nice property with a pond on it, and I took the little guys for a ride on their ATV. :D They also decorate their house for Christmas more than anyone I've ever seen! I went to help them out some with that. I took a pic of them sitting in the 'ocean' of the big village. It still lacks a few things, but for the most part it was all together. I also tracked down Gracie, their cat, and got a picture with her.

Also, I bought some fingerless gloves a couple of weeks ago, and their the kind that had the mitten tops that you can fold back on them. Since I didn't want those, I took them off, and they reminded me of little beanies...:P Can you guess what I did with them? Unfortunately, there were only 2, and I have 3 penguins. I'm planning on making Marc-Andre Penguin a cap that he can wear backwards, since he's so fond of those. :)

Thanks to a string of very boring temp jobs, I am getting a lot of Roamers done. We're almost at one year of Penguin Production! Orders have slowed down, but are still coming in....I've surpassed 350 orders.....wow! And we're almost halfway to our next $1,000! So take a moment and give yourselves a huge round of applause.....you guys ROCK!!

Roamers Bring the World Together

Joeceff and Susan welcomed Sid and Max Penguin into their Tulsa home many months ago (rumor has it that the boys love that midwest living!)

Susan and I had the fun of meeting with another of the Sidney Crosby Show and Roaming Pens fan. Val (her blog name is also “Val”) is from Wisconsin , but grew up here in Tulsa , where I’m originally from and Susan and I currently live. She came through Tulsa last Sunday and we met with her for several hours and took some pictures. Val is the one in the white t-shirt, Susan is in the black one and if you couldn’t guess, I’m the one with the beard. I’m also sending a couple of pics with our Sid and Max Penguin celebrating with their own version of “The Cup”. We just wanted to let you know that at least in part, you are responsible for a new-found friendship.

A Roamers Reunion

Carlie (CarlieCurlyQ) and her family came to Nashville all the way from Buffalo for the annual CMA Music Festival. I was sooooooo excited to meet my most enthusiastic Roamer friend! I visited with her and her mom and we talked a lot of hockey (go figure!). It was fun getting to meet them and reunite the Original Sidney Penguin with some of his teammates :)

We should do this again next year, Carlie!

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS - 2009 STANLEY CUP CHAMPS!!!

I really am at a loss for words right now....I am spent, excited, and emotional! But I couldn't let this day pass without congratulating the winners of The Cup. The boys played with heart and tenacity. I could go on and on about each player and what he contributed....every last one of them gave 110%. I feel like a proud Mama.....my boys played so well! :)

Nadia lives in Colorado Springs. You might remember that she and Sidney Penguin took a hike up a steep incline (my legs hurt just thinking about it!). Back in November Sid took Nadia and some friends to an Avalanche game against Calgary:

Updates and other things

Well, I have officially finished my 200th penguin! That is a heckuva lot of yarn! I'll be up over 300 before all is said and done (or maybe 400.....or 500......)

A lot of people have asked and, no, I haven't heard anything from the MLF yet. You all will be the first to know if I do!

On the international news front, I just sent two penguins to Switzerland! Kris S. is living over there and Geno and Sidney Penguin are going to go visit. I hope she sends us some really great pictures :) Also, my friend Nancy is traveling in Europe and she had so much fun taking Sidney P. to Boston that I sent him with her abroad. S.P. gets to travel a lot more than I get to....

And, last but not least, Sidney Penguin and I went and saw our very favorite band a few weeks ago....the Dave Matthews Band! This was Sid's 3rd show (he went with me to Indianapolis last summer). And what song so you suppose SP wanted to hear? Well, "Captain", of course! Sadly, he was disappointed....but Mama got to hear "Recently" for the first time in 20 shows, so the evening was a success :) (maybe Sidney will get to hear Captain in Indy this summer....one can only hope...)

Sidney Heads to Erie for Homecoming

Last fall, Sidney and Lauren headed back to Gannon University in Erie for homecoming. Lauren showed Sid the sites and it looks like they had a fun time!

Gannon is a Catholic university, which is why we have a statue of Jesus and two students outside the Campus Center. It's kind of an unofficial tradition to have your picture taken with Jesus, so I figured Sidney Penguin should too!

Erie is full of fish like this, and frogs too. Each one is painted with a different theme (in Cleveland, they have guitars that are each painted in a unique way). Most of them are outside, but this one hangs out inside the academic building where I had almost all of my classes.

Sidney Penguin visited the Erie Civic Center, home of the Erie Otters (OHL). They were setting up for the circus that day otherwise we would've gone inside and looked around.

Directly adjacent to the Civic Center is Jerry Uht Park, home of the Erie SeaWolves baseball team (AA Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers).

Since we couldn't go inside the Civic Center, S.P. got his picture taken with a schedule that was posted outside.

On the way down to the beach, we stopped at one of my favorite places to eat in Erie. Unfortunately, they were closed for the season so S.P. couldn't enjoy a Smith's hot dog there (Smith's are an Erie classic).

Sally's is right next to Sara's. They have really good pie, but they were closed for the season too.

Carlie's Roamers Hit the 'Burgh

Jodie has e-mailed me Roamer pictures that didn't get a chance to debut on The Show, so we will make sure they have their moment in the spotlight here!

So we start off with a trip Carlie made from Buffalo to the Mellon with Sidney Penguin and Jordan Penguin in tow:

Well anyway, i told my neice that we were going to Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago, and i kinda, accidentally;), taught her Sidney's name.Lol! So when i told her we were going to Pittsburgh she said,"Carlie! I want to go Pittburgh! I want to go Pittburgh and find Sinny Crobee!" LOL!!! I thought that was so cute! I don't know HOW she made that connection! She must have overheard me talking about our trip! I didn't teach her that Sidney plays in Pittsburgh or ANYTHING!!! The things kids pick up these days! And i purposely spelled Pittsburgh and Sidney Crosby wrong cause that's how she pronounces it! LOL!!!

Now if that just isn't the best.hug.ever!

Isn't EVERYDAY a great day for hockey.:) When my dad took this picture the wind started kicking up A LOT!!! So we had to keep re-sitting them up. But they kept falling over! So i said,"Alright, just get the camera all ready and i'll hold them up. Tell me when you're ready and i'll run away." So we got it! But as my dad was taking the picture, S.P. fell over! So he said,"I got it!" He had snapped it right before he fell over. And if you look at the picture, Sidney is leaning ready to fall! Good timing!

I think the boys are ready to go inside and enjoy some hockey!

The Moment You've All Been Waiting For

$1,000 to the Mario Lemieux Foundation!!!!

Yes, my friends, I officially have $1,000 in hand so that a check can finally be sent to the MLF!

Honestly, when this project first started, I hoped I could send $100 or maybe even $500 to the foundation. I never dared to dream that I would be writing $1,000 on there! But you guys enthusiastically showed up and made this a reality. I may stitch these little guys together and get them where they need to go, but this is YOUR money heading to Pittsburgh and you should all give yourselves a huge pat on the back!!

So the plan is to mail the check along with these three penguins and a letter tomorrow. I wanted the MLF to see in person what this was all about. The letter includes this web site along with The Sidney Crosby Show.....hopefully they will check it out and see all the roaming the Roamers do! This is also why it's taken me so long to make this announcement....Jodie and I wanted everything to be up and running so they could see as many of the pictures as possible.

I really cannot thank you all enough for everything you have contributed to this. When I first went to Jodie with the idea, I asked "do you think anyone would even want one??" And seeing how you all have embraced the "roaming" idea and taken them places and gotten their pictures absolutely brings tears to my eyes (and makes laugh, quite literally, out loud!). You guys are so creative!! I love every picture.....from them helping you study to seeing them in the hands of a real live Penguin....they just blow me away. Your patience astounds me...that you would wait MONTHS for one of these little guys is just awesome. My only regret is that I can't finish them any faster!

And, of course, my biggest THANK YOU goes to Jodie! When I presented this to her, she embraced it and gave it a home. She allowed this project to take on a life of it's own on her blog. She took the time to create posts and organize pictures, all in the middle of hockey season and her transition from one job to the next. And then helping me set up this site! This project is truly a two-woman job and this announcement would not have ever been possible without her. Cheers, Jodie! We make an AMAZING team!!

So where do we go from here? Well, orders keep coming in and we are on our way to another check to the MLF :) I've always said, I will continue making these little guys as long as people want them. Jodie and I are cooking up another idea....so stayed tuned for that! (I know....more waiting!). I still have many e-mails of Roamers yet to post, so things won't slow down around here anytime soon. And I hope they never do!

The Original Sidney Penguin, Part 1

A friend of mine was checking out this site and asked "Where are YOUR pictures??" Well, duh. I hadn't even thought about that! (it really is amazing I make it out alive each day :) )

So, without further ado.....the Adventures of the Original Sidney Penguin:

We had a little time to kill over the summer.....and Sidney didn't want to be away from the rink too long. So I braved the ice for the first time since junior high (and let me tell you....junior high was just a few years ago....)

Where would Sidney be most at home? Well, an ice rink of course....

Sidney goes wherever I go...including my 20-year high school reunion over Labor Day. It was S.P.'s first trip to my hometown of Raymore, MO (just south of Kansas City). We had a fun time visiting my old stomping grounds:

Unfortunately, I spend most of my time at work....but Sid doesn't mind so much hanging out with K.C. Wolf (Chiefs mascot) and my London Tower bear while I slave away for mere pittance...

I don't get to travel as much as I would like, so my friend, Nancy, entertained Sidney by taking him on her trip to Boston. I dare say, she had more fun than I imagined!

I dragged S.P. along to meet my beloved Dallas Stars at the downtown Hilton in Nashville. As his reward for being so patient with my love for my "other team", I got his picture in front of the beautiful Hall of Fame across the street:

Sorry to have been quiet lately....I know the excuse "work is crazy" is a tired one, but it is oh so true! But things should quiet down after this week and I can get back to getting cute little Roamers up for you to see! (I have also been remiss on making penguins....*hangs head in shame*)

Anyhow, I believe Jodie and I are done copying TSCS posts (which is why there are many, many posts all in a short span). I believe she has some pictures that weren't posted and I have received some in the last few weeks. That will become my priority this weekend :)

Also, I know I keep promising a big announcement and it IS coming! I believe I can finally get around to that on Sunday.....so tune in then! You won't be sorry....I promise....

Pens v Sens (L 2-3)

Friend of The Show Ali W. sent in pictures of a very special adventure for Roamer Brooks Penguin:

Last [month] my hometown got some exciting news when a family from my hometown got chosen to be on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, produced by ABC. I was pretty bummed that I wouldn't be able to make it back to volunteer and see the build so Brooks Penguin went back to PA without me (courtesy of the USPS) ... Today he had a great time checking out the build, and learning about the family that Extreme Makeover and ABC were helping out.... (the one boy in the family is in my younger brother's class at school)...Enjoy.

#1 - Last night [November 11^th], before he went to see the build, Brooks checked out our local Dick's Sporting Goods -- some employees there were watching the game, so Brooks Penguin cheered with them, and got to see their exciting comeback vs. the Wings.

#2 - Brooks found his very own volunteer badge and famous volunteer blue shirt

#3 - Brooks with the house that is being built -- it's only been since Sunday that they've been building -- WOW!

#4 - The Drumm family that the house belongs to...

#6 - My cousin (and fellow Pens fan) got to go and volunteer, and took Brooks along for the ride!

#7 - Along the way, Brooks snagged a coveted pass to the VIP area. :)

#8 - While in the VIP area, before going to check out the house, Brooks had to get himself one of the hard hats -- just in case. :)

**This episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will be airing on ABC sometime in January... :)

Luxury Boxes Are Sweet

I know this from experience because the company my husband works for has one at the Mellon Arena, and we've gotten the tickets for it about a half dozen times in the twelve years he has worked for them. The view is almost like an overhead view from a blimp (though not quite that far away, haha!). The TVs in the suites are tuned to the broadcast of the game, so you just have to turn your head for an instant replay if something spectacular happens. There is so much leg and elbow room, and the box we occasionally have the privilege of using even has a couch!

The best part is that there is a very real chance to bump into a legend in the hallway or one of the injured players from the current roster, who often watch the game from Mario's box. In the few times we've been blessed to watch a game from the box, we saw the likes of Mario himself and Joe Mullen. Once, ex-Pen Robert Lang (who at the time was nursing a hurt wrist) was trucking down the hallway and put his hands on my shoulders to gently guide me out of the way and said, "Pardon me, ma'am." and winked at me.

The reason I bring the suites up is because Friend of The Show Lauren H. got to have her own experience of a lifetime in one of these luxury suites. Here is her recap of her incredible day - oh, and she took along a very special little guest:

I had the opportunity to attend Saturday’s game against Vancouver, and even better, I got to enjoy the game from a luxury box! I had never sat in a luxury box at the Igloo before, and it had been a dream of mine since I was a little girl!

My dad’s company insurance is through Highmark (a major sponsor of the Penguins) and his Highmark rep was the one who invited us to sit in their box! It was definitely an experience I will never forget!

Sitting in the box was surreal – I’d always dreamed of what it would be like, and it pretty much met all my expectations! At one point, Ryan Whitney walked right by our box on his way upstairs to the press box, but we were all had our attention directed towards the ice and the person who did see him go by couldn’t remember his name (!!!!) and he was gone by the time we all ran out into the hall (by we, I mean my siblings and I). My sister is a huge Mario fan, so we had our eyes open looking for him the whole game. We *think* me *might* have spotted him a box directly across the ice from ours, but then we also heard that his box was located on the same side as ours, so we’re not sure if it was really him, and our camera wouldn’t zoom in any more to confirm it.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Iceburgh! I’ve been to tons of Penguins games over the years, but today was actually the first time I got to meet and get my picture with Iceburgh!

[snoop: Look closely to see who's between Lauren and Iceburgh!! Thank goodness this mascot encounter wasn't as risky as the last one! ;)]

We were trying to figure out why he would be up wandering around among the luxury boxes, but then after the game as people were leaving, I noticed a big group of kids walking toward the elevator at one point, and I immediately thought of the luxury box that Sid purchased for kids and I thought that *maybe* those kids had been Sid’s special guests and that Iceburgh had paid them a visit! :) I don’t know if that’s really the case or not, but I like to think it is!

The fight 25 seconds into the game was great!!! I hadn’t seen any good fights lately (I was still at class when the Gronk dropped the gloves a few nights ago) and this one was definitely one for the books! Too bad it cost the Cookie Monster a game misconduct. :( Hearing John Barbaro list off all the penalties was kind of amusing.

I was very sad that I wouldn’t get to see Fleury play, but I was slightly consoled by the fact that I was going to get the rare opportunity to see Roberto Luongo play in person – I’ve heard so much about him and the Pens don’t play them often. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury early in the game and had to be helped off the ice by his teammates. We had FSN on the TV in the box, but it was muted, and the best we could figure is that he suffered some type of groin injury. After he left the ice and Sanford came out to replace him, my brother-in-law and brother and I got into a conversation about backup goalies. We were explaining to my brother that since Fleury is out right now, Dany, our backup goalie is playing, and they called up John Curry from WB-S to backup Dany. Since Vancouver’s backup goalie was now playing, he asked what would happen if something happened to him, something I was curious about too. My brother-in-law informed us there would be a brief pause in the game to give another player (most likely a defenseman) time to suit up in goalie pads and come out to tend goal! The thought of this was really amusing and as much as I hate to see players get hurt, I would love to see something like this happen in a game!

The game itself was just weird. That’s the only way I can describe it. The Penguins didn’t seem to have too much desperation and the Canucks’ playing didn’t really blow me away either. None of the goals were too impressive – the whole game was just weird. And where the heck did this rivalry come from?! The Boys of Winter were definitely playing more on the physical side today, and the scrums were all pretty fun to watch.

The Highmark rep who invited us said he loved watching the game with all of us, and we would have to do this again sometime! Of course, we all agreed whole-heartedly! So, with any luck, this won’t be the last game I get to enjoy from the box!

Also, they showed a video clip that I really hope they decide to post on PensTV for everyone to enjoy. It was Dupuis, Max, and Sid sitting in the locker room and it went like this:

Max: Hi! I’m Max Talbot!

Sid: And I’m Sidney Crosby and we’d just like to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving!

Max: Don’t eat too much turkey.

(Dupuis doesn’t say anything, but has this big goofy grin on his face the whole time. Sid was smiling too – a nice change from his usual serious self!)

So many childhood dreams came true today and the whole experience was quite surreal!

Evidently Army took Siddo and some of the other guys out to dinner last night. But as they say, there are no friends on the ice. It's going to be a bittersweet game, for sure. Also, Marc-Andre Fleury is still out.

A WIN IN THREE PERIODS FOR ONCE!!!! ;) Due to the fact that there are only 3 photos of the game are available right now in formats that I can easily save, I am filling in the gaps with pictures of my own Roamers tonight. I came home from work after doing the interview with Brian Engblom (which went really well - I'll give you the complete scoop on that experience once Versus has the audio of the conference call ready) to find two new arrivals...

FIRST PERIOD

Early in the game, Philippe Boucher was called for hooking. On the ensuing Thrashers power play, Bryan Little blocked a slap shot by his own teammate, Ilya Kovalchuk - with his foot. He made his way to the bench in obvious pain. Just as Hal Gill was called for a delayed penalty (also for hooking), Vyacheslav Kozlov scored the first goal of the night. [Pens 0, Thrashers 1]

All I need is two d-men and I'd have myself a whole shift of Roamers!

The Thrashers still had two minutes with a man advantage, but they failed to score. A long shot of the ice revealed that about a third of the seats in the arena weren't filled!!! O_o Paul Steigerwald later commented that the Thrashers have been selling some of their weekend games out but their weekday games are suffering. Siddo told Steigy and Bob Errey that it was just like old times at dinner with Colby last night. He was making everyone laugh and teasing everyone (as usual). Errey then said that Army had been asked to wear the microphone for the evening, but he declined saying that he'd do it for any other game except this one. :(

Sid was behind the net working his puck-protecting magic when Army headed straight for him. Sid saw him at the last second and made a spinning move to quickly get out of the way. Later on a different shift, Sid, former Thrasher Pascal Dupuis, and Miroslav Satan went to the net with speed. Sid had control and passed the puck to Dupuis, who sent a hard pass towards Satan. The puck hit his skate, so he kicked it to his stick and promptly scored. [Pens 1, Thrashers 1]

Matt Cooke blocked a shot from Ron Hainsey with his foot. But since he's not a football player (LOL - that still cracks me up), he didn't let it keep him off the ice for long. Kris Letang lined up the puck in mid-stride for a beautiful shot on goal, but Jordan Staal's deflection was just slightly too wide. Then Army hit Sid behind Dany Sabourin. Sid quite obviously didn't like it and gave Colby a quick shove to let him know it. Steigy said that it was great because the two would be fine again for dinner again tonight as Errey laughed and said, "Maybe, maybe not!" In the last seconds of the period, Geno Malkin refused to concede the puck over to the Thrashers, and it led to a great chance for Petr Sykora that Ondrej Pavelec was able to stop.

SECOND PERIOD

Alex Goligoski was the lone man back when Kovalchuk and former Penguin Erik Christensen got control and headed towards Sabou. Gogo didn't sweat it though. He forced Kovalchuk to make an awkward pass on which Christensen couldn't get a shot. Sabou made a stunning pad save when he shut the door on Marty Reasoner, who had taken a sweet centering pass from Army. Superstar Max Talbot took one for his team by taking a stick to his already bruised face. Mathieu Schneider was the guilty man, but the Pens didn't score on their advantage. Sid made a beautiful inside/outside move to get to the net, but it didn't result in a goal.

Cookie Monster was like a bull seeing red. He started hitting anything in blue. One hit in particular was a pretty brutal (legal!) hit on Koslov that sent him down to the ice. Of course, the Thrashers started gunning for the agitating Cookie. Predictably, Cookie ended up drawing an interference on Nathan Oystrick. Forty-one seconds later, the Pens would get a 2 man advantage when Marty Reasoner was called for hooking. Geno hit the goalpost, but the Penguins inexplicably did not score on the 5-on-3, nor did they score on the remaining 5-on-4. (Well, it wasn't completely inexplicable - Pavelec did make a good save or two.)

Right as the power play ended, Boucher was called for tripping. The Thrashers had an extended period of possession in the Pens' zone, but they again did not score on their advantage. A few minutes later, Tyler Kennedy swooped in behind the net and basically ran over Hainsey. Shown from two different angles on the replay, it was difficult to tell whether or not TK got away with a trip. Either way, TK sent the puck to Siddo at the front of the net. As he rushed in, Sid started to fall down. He still managed to fire a forehand shot that went top shelf off the crossbar, then the goalpost, then over the goal line as the Saint fell to his arse. [Pens 2, Thrashers 1] I was hoping Sid would stand up and point at Kovalchuk afterwards, but he didn't. :P

The crowd booed as Sid's name was announced. (Puck Daddy Greg Wyshyski has a good theory why other teams' fans hate our Siddo so much. Also mentioned is an article by good Friend of The Show Tony F. of The Confluence on Kukla's Korner in which he asks if Siddo is a liability on the shootout...) Just under a minute and ½ later, Jim Slater swung out from behind the net to wrap one around and right through Sabou's 5-hole. [Pens 2, Thrashers 2] The period ended at a draw.

THIRD PERIOD

Letang drilled Todd White high and hard as he went after the puck in the corner. White attempted to get up but couldn't, and it became clear that he was disoriented and needed attention. All four officials were positioned in between both teams, but that didn't stop some Thrashers from trying to go after Letang. (It was like a delayed reaction or something.) Sabou made an unreal save on Kovalchuk after he was able to go 1-on-none. On Letang's next shift, he had a little company - Erik Godard. No doubt Michel Therrien put him out there with Tanger to make sure no Thrasher decided to be a hero.

Look at how good Baylee is with our Roamers! Haha, when I tell him to "STAY!" he completely freezes - he seriously won't even lift his head - until I say "Okay, buddy!" so I knew they'd be safe with him. ;)

Gogo put his hip out and clipped Army near the benches. Army took exception to it, but Godard came over and quickly put a stop to any fighting ideas Army may have had. Kovalchuk hit the post. Dupuis was called for hooking, but the Thrashers didn't score. Sabou made a series of amazing saves to preserve the tie. Satan hit Garnet Exelby, which forced a turnover to Dupuis. This led directly to Sid drawing a penalty on Chris Thorburn for interference. On the ensuing power play, Gogo turned the puck over at the blue line to Reasoner for a shorthanded breakaway. It wasn't as clean a breakaway as Reasoner had likely hoped since Siddo skated hard and backchecked him. It forced him to take an awkward shot that Sabou was able to reach out and cover. At the other end of the ice, Sid fired an unreal shot at Syko's stick to score the power play goal. [Pens 3, Thrashers 2] The shot was so hard that it broke Syko's stick!

There were still 2:20 left in the game. With just 0:42 left, Pavelec was pulled in favor of the extra attacker - who, in this case, was none other than Colby. The Thrashers' efforts failed and the Pens won the game - without needing the overtime period! Siddo himself had a hand in each of the 3 goals scored tonight. He leaves Atlanta with a goal and 2 assists. :)

Not all was good, though: during the post-game show, we were informed that Flower is not going to play on Saturday. He is nursing an undisclosed injury that he suffered at the Sabres game I attended, but I can honestly say that, during the game, we didn't even know he had gotten hurt. He hid it very well. Hopefully another couple of days off will be the cure.

After that bad news, I'm sure you need a laugh. So now you MUST check this out. (Hopefully, you all got to see the one from last year when there were multiple Penguins involved...) Thanks to Friend of The Show Carlie D. for sending that gem!! LOL

An update on the Roaming Penguin sales courtesy of R.P. Mama Stephanie S.:

WE HAVE REACHED 200 PENGUINS!! I am sooooo excited (and a little freaked out seeing as I have over 100 to make). But this means over $1,000 will go to the MLF. I was just hoping to send $500....so this totally makes my day!! Jodie, you and The Friends of The Show are just incredible....how did I get so lucky??

WOW!!! $1,000 is a lot of freaking money! Thank you so much, everyone! To Stephanie: Take your time with them and don't get overwhelmed - we're all Friends here. We understand that these creations take time. :)

My husband and I were joined in our trip to Saturday's game by two VI(R)Ps. Our Roaming Penguins sleep in style - this bag keeps them safe from dirt (and dog hair!) when they're not out and about. Sidney Penguin and Mario Penguin hopped out of their shelter, got their tickets, and were ready to hit the road!

Before we left, S.P. and M.P. helped me choose my attire. It was a toss up between my Sidney Crosby Winter Classic jersey and this old school sweater. The Roamers decided that I should go with the sweater, since it is the one I wore to the Winter Classic. It was a good choice - both times I've worn it, the Pens toppled the Sabres, so I guess it worked! (Incidentally, if anyone is interested, they are selling these sweaters at the Mellon Arena again, except the new ones feature the newer scowling skating penguin. They're a bit pricey, though - $120!)

Sidney P. and Mario P. had to sit in the backseat because my husband had already called shotgun. ;)

The Roamers were extremely excited to finally to see the Boys in action! Sidney and Mario were privileged enough to meet Pengylady's Sidney Penguin, but I thought it might cause a rip in the spacetime continuum if there was a photo of two Sidney Penguins. (Okay. Actually, I was so stoked to be at the Mellon and excited to finally meet Pengylady and put a face to the screen name that I completely forgot to set up a photo with our Roamers. I know - it was a great chance and I blew it. I'm sorry.) Here are S.P. and M.P. watching the Pens during the warmup:

Saturday, of course, was the first game in which the Pens wore their "new" third jerseys. The Roaming group that lives with 1WingAngel and her twin sister Nicole G. got some fancy new duds for the occasion, courtesy of the twins' extremely talented mother:

Speaking of the twins, the one and only Marc-Andre Fleury actually remembered meeting Marc-Andre Penguin! Friend of The Show Lauren H. shares the story:

I got the chance to meet Marc-Andre today at a promotional appearance he made in Mount Nebo (Pittsburgh suburb) - it was at a phone store and the owner is the guy who my dad gets all his company cell phones from, so we got a bit of VIP access - we got to sort of skip the line and were one of the first people to see him - they kept saying "no posed pictures" but they let it slide with us!

He was so sweet - you could tell he was really overwhelmed when they told him there were a few hundred people standing outside in the cold, all waiting to see him. When he saw my Sidney Penguin, he smiled and said "Hey it's one of those little penguins!" so he definitely remembers meeting his miniature counterpart! Anyways, we couldn't hang around too long (which I was kind of sad about) because my awesome dad also had Steelers tickets for my siblings and I!

We froze our butts off and I think my toes are still thawing out now. When we were walking in, the snow was coming down so hard it looked like a whiteout, but it didn't snow too much throughout the game!

Anyways, Sidney Penguin spent most of the game hiding in the warmth of my jacket, but I was able to snap a couple pictures of him enjoying the game too!

Looks like the Roamers are branching out when it comes to professional sporting events. ;)

Pens v Sabres

The Pens meet the Sabres today in their "new" third jerseys.

The snoop-mobile is leaving for Pittsburgh in a few hours to make the trip west to the Mellon Arena to witness it.

The Sabres will see that powder blue, and all they (and we!) will be able to think about is Siddo's icy cold, snowy shootout win.

And this is what they're going to want to do...

Hahaha, I don't know how she managed to talk him into it, but that's Friend of The Show Carlie D. with Sabretooth, who is holding a cocked fist to our little Sidney Penguin's chin!!! Let's hope Sidney Crosby and the rest of the Boys can exact a little revenge on the Sabres for this! ;)

Kris Penguin arrived in Bloomington, Indiana just in time for the regular season! He enjoyed walking around the Indiana University campus. Here he is in front of the "Sample Gates" on the west side of campus:

Kris Penguin's first trip out of state was to St. Louis, Missouri to watch the Penguins take on the Blues. He enjoyed the car ride and getting to see some of Illinois on the way:

For dinner, we went to Old Spaghetti Factory. Kris Penguin enjoyed the strawberry lemonade. Kris Penguin wants to let everyone know that the Detroit shirt in the background is being worn by a friend. She wanted to see the Penguins play and wore a Penguins' jersey during the game. He thought it was great that she wanted to go along and has no hard feelings (until November 11^th, that is):

Some Friends Meet a Flower

Who better to tell you about a close encounter of the Flower kind than the girls who lived it? Good Friends of The Show 1WingAngel and her twin sister, Nicole G., sent in these photos for us, and 1WingAngel was kind enough to write today's post. Enjoy! (Remember you can click the pictures to enlarge them!)

Nicole and I have a lot of pictures with the Pens piling up in our cameras, so we thought we'd finally send them your way with a recap of what we've done with our Boys thus far. :)

A few weeks later, who should arrive in the mail but our trio of Roaming Penguins! Marc-Andre Penguin, Sidney Penguin and Maxime Penguin were all very excited to come out of their boxes and meet us.

SP, MAP, and MP all took in the stunning "Wall of Croz" in Nicole's room...

Then the group checked out my room, and MAP was very amused by my smaller wall dedicated to his human doppelganger...

MP, meanwhile, searched in vain for a wall dedicated to him.

SP later discovered that the "Wall of Croz" isn't the only Crosby-dedicated spot in his friend's bedroom. There's the wall by her computer...

...and then her ceiling.

After the introductions and icebreakers, a few weeks passed until my mother heard that Marc-Andre Fleury would sign autographs at the BC Sports in Ross Park Mall. Marc-Andre Penguin was very excited to hear this, and absolutely insisted that we go. Mom and I couldn't resist those huge, pleading eyes! We signed up on one condition: He had to allow Mom to glue a strip of material above his number so that Flower could sign him.

We waited approximately an hour and a half in a long, LONG line of Pens fans before we finally met Marc-Andre Fleury. I was numb with nervousness and excitement; Fleury is my favorite Penguin! (some of you may know that I find him adorable...) And while I waited at the front of the line, I tried to calm my nerves so that I could make a good impression on my favorite Penguin. So I approached Fleury with a smile as I walked to him, thinking, I've gotta make this perfect, gotta make this perfect - and then my foot bounced off of something hard as soon as I got there.

Fleury chuckled. "Oops, sorry." My foot had hit his, which was concealed under the long blue tablecloth. At the moment, I was mortified -the first thing my favorite adorable Penguin said to me ever was "Oops, sorry"- but you know the meeting improved from there and now I just laugh about it, but my family actually teases me for it. They call it "giving Fleury a footsie." >:( I WILL NEVER LIVE THIS DOWN, apparently.

Marc was very polite and attentive, even though the supervisors tried to rush each group. I approached him first with my Fleury jersey, and asked him how he was "holding up" since the line was still incredibly long. At this, his head snapped up.

"Is it still long?" Dear Marc had almost a pleading look in his eyes when he asked me, because I'm sure he was a bit tired after signing for nearly two hours following a late game in St. Louis.

I smiled sadly. "Very..." I felt so bad for him! But he sucked in air through his teeth and flashed me a smile.

"Yeah... so far, so good." Marc slid the jersey across the table to me, and I stepped with it to one side as Nicole approached the table.

"I have a penguin for you to sign..." Nicole pushed a very nervous Marc-Andre Penguin towards Flower, who smiled at the little guy. When MAF took the penguin for the first time, he glanced down and said, "That's the first time I've seen this." He LOVED MAP and the whole idea of Roaming Penguins; our mother (who took every MAF picture) explained it to him and he listened attentively and turned the doll in his hands before signing.

"That's pretty cool." He returned MAP -"There you go."- and Nicole gave him The Card.

"We made a card for you and the team."

"Oh, thank you." Mom and I moved at the same time to shake Marc's hand, and we laughed. Mom let me go first, although Marc crossed his hands as though to accomodate us both at once. Then Nicole shook his hand, and Marc said "Nice to meet you" to each of us with a smile. As we walked away, we wished him good luck against the Oilers, and Marc grinned.

"Bye. Thanks a lot." He pulled The Card closer to himself and watched us leave.

All in all, it was a fantastic Penguins-themed month! :) I would definitely give ANYTHING to know what Fleury thinks of The Card, though - wouldn't you? It was certainly a huge success, thanks to all who participated. ? I really can't thank all of you enough for responding so quickly and creatively to our offer, and I know that this will mean a lot to our team.

You have all done such a fantastic job - these Roaming Penguins stories have been entertaining us since the beginning of summer. After we decided to collect all the stories and turn them into a children's book, there were two major goals that we decided to try to meet: 1.) photograph a Roamer with his human counterpart, and 2.) score a picture of a Roamer with the Stanley Cup. Good Friend of The Show Mer managed to cross number 2 off our list - and then some!! Read on:

Mario Penguin and I took a big trip last weekend. Sadly, not to Stockholm for the season opener (how cool would THAT have been!?) but to Ontario, where we took in some sights, some yummy treats, and a hockey game (or three). Here are some of the highlights of our trip.

Photo#1804: Mario kept me going (and tried to help me) with my awful econ paper so that we could guiltlessly run around Toronto for the whole weekend and have fun!

Photo#1809: Mario wasn't a big fan of the little cupcakes, but he LOVED the tuna-salad sandwiches at the Royal York Hotel.

Photo#1969: Mario scoping out some NHL prospects at an Oshawa Generals game.

Mario always loves making new friends. Especially friends like John Tavares, the incredibly talented Captain of the Oshawa Generals who broke Wayne Gretzky's long-held OHL scoring record as a sixteen year-old. [snoop: He's also been predicted to be the NHL top draft pick of 2009!!!] If John looks a little tired, it's because he played a 3-point game that night against the Kingston Frontenacs, posting two goals and an assist to help his team to a 5-3 victory.

Photo#1840: I tried to explain that it wasn't just a really pretty bird bath... but he wouldn't listen--he misses hanging out with Stanley...

It didn't occur to me at the time that Mario Penguin touching the Cup might be bad luck. (I know *I* got him into and out of the Cup without touching it...) Somehow his little penguiny self doesn't seem capable of bringing bad luck upon anyone. In fact, Mario was so popular, I ended up telling at least two dozen people about Stephanie's project and your site.

My jaw hit the floor when I saw Mer's photos. If Tavares is indeed picked number one overall, we'll have to give all the credit to Mario Penguin!! ;)

And it keeps getting better because Sidney Penguin got to visit the place where it all began with Friends of The Show MichelleInNovaScotia and her daughter:

We decided to take a few pics of Sid the Penguin in Cole Harbour since my nephew had a game at Cole Harbour Place today.

Here are some of the adventures SP went on after he arrived at my home in New Holland, PA. I live in Lancaster Co with the Amish, but I am not Amish.

Piano: SP found the piano in my house and wanted to sing a few songs ...

Lunch Box: SP went along with my friend and I to Akron Park in Lancaster County PA to watch us play Frisbee golf. We had him facing the opposite direction of where we were throwing because the throws were too embarrassing to have him witness them. He was carried through the course in his special SP carrying case so as not to get souvenirs on his feet from all the ducks ...

Ducks: Sid enjoyed watching the ducks with us after the game ...

Apple: I introduced the art of making applesauce to SP and noticed a Siamese apple just about as big as he was!

Covered Bridge: On my day off doing errands around the county we stopped by a covered bridge (most if not all are red) and most are one lane across. SP is in the lower left corner on the stone in front of the bridge.

Cat's Back Sign: The road with the covered bridge is called Cat's Back Road (there is a hill nearby called Cat's Back). The writing under the sign is "Pennsylvania Dutch" which is ironic since most Amish did not come from Holland .. they came from Germany .. and speak "low German" .. but I gave Sidney a speech lesson on how to "Dutchify" the English language to sound like an Amish person.

Mennonite Buggy: I pointed out the many buggies (MANY buggies) to SP and explained to him the difference between the Amish and Mennonite buggies. (Amish are gray, Mennonites are black) And Sid being the tourist he is wanted to get a pic .. so I drove at 2 mph to get a good shot and so as not to hurt him while trying to get this pic. Good thing Mario P wasn't there or I'm sure he would have gotten a lecture on being more careful ...

Seatbelt: SP wore his seatbelt for the trip except for when he wanted the buggy pic ... just like a good little penguin

Mascot Mill Sign: SP had this bad habit of wanting to be on the tops of high signs and had fallen once off this sign before I had a chance to take this pic ...

Mascot Mill Bench: Since SC likes to fish, I took SP to the place where I was taken to go fishing when I was growing up. It was a nice break from our busy errand running and we got to enjoy the leaves and the river for a little before it was time to continue our journey ...

Intercourse, PA: Ah the mecca of all Amish touristy things ... I got a pic of him with the sign for him to show to his friends back home.

Sidney Penguin is a busy bird! He then headed back up north to visit Friend of The Show Evans87 in Kemptville, Ontario:

I was delighted to receive my penguin! There is one picture of Sidney Penguin with my Sidney collage as the backdrop...

...and also one of myself with my penguin.

I go to school every day, so I may not do as much interesting things with my penguin as the next person, but Sidney Penguin still needs his sleep.

Sidney Penguins also loves my Sidney T-shirt! GO PENS GO!

Kemptville, Ontario, got our first snow fall of the season, and Sidney begged me to take him out to play! So out we went!

How can I say no to that face?

Catching Up With the Roamers (part 3)

Now back to our Catching Up With the Roamers. (Click all of the following pictures to enlarge them.) Recently, Sidney Penguin headed up north for some fun with Friend of The Show Amanda T.:

I'm from Buffalo, and I've had my Sidney Penguin for a few weeks now, but I'm pregnant, so I had to make hay while the sun shone and do stuff around the house for the arrival of the baby. Anyhoo, today I finally got out with my friend Stacy. We took Sidney to Niagara Falls.

Pic471: He's arrived! Sidney Penguin waits patiently until Amanda checks her mail.

Pic472: Sidney is all buckled up and ready to go on his first adventure!

Pic473: Sidney waits for his food before driving up to Niagara Falls. It took a long time to find an adequate supply of fresh shrimp, squid, and fish for him, but he said it was worth the wait!

Pic474: We finally arrive at Niagara Falls State Park and Sidney excitedly looks over what there is to do.

Pic476: Sidney checks out the points of interest from the big map inside the Visitor's Center.

Pic477: On our way out to the Falls, Sidney begs us to stop and make a souvenir penny. He turned the crank all by himself!

Pic482: Sidney wanted a closer view of the Falls, so we let him look through the observation tool which magnifies everything so you feel like you're right there!

Pic483: Sidney wanted to take a boat ride on the Maid of the Mist, but we were afraid they wouldn't have rain coats small enough to fit him. He insisted he would be fine, since he is a water bird, after all, but we didn't want anything bad to happen to him, so we stayed on shore.

Pic484: While we were in the gift shop, Sidney found a friend to talk to!

Pic486: When he saw this New York State license plate with his name on it, Sidney asked us nicely to buy it for him as a memento of his wonderful visit to Niagara Falls!

Also from the Buffalo area, Friend of The Show Carlie D. snapped a picture of Sidney Penguin after the arrival of his new friend, Jordan Penguin:

I got a Jordan penguin! I took a picture of Jordan and Sidney sitting on my fuzzy Sabres hat that just so happens to be in the Winter Classic mural!

S.P. then headed south to catch a special game with Friend of The Show Heidi S.:

Tonight Sidney Penguin went to see the Baby Pens play in Wilkes-Barre! Unfortunately the boys lost in the overtime shootout on the very last shooter of the five round shootout. But he did see Janne Pesonen score an awesome breakaway goal (he also scored the only goal for the Pens in the shootout)!! Another familiar name, Jeff Taffe, added a goal as well, as did Chris Minard. It was a little hard to find somewhere to pose, but this is Sidney in front of center ice at the Wachovia Arena.

Marc-Andre Penguin and I made a trip to State College today to watch the first Penguin game with my friend Sarah. Before the game M.A.P. did some sight seeing on the Penn State Campus.

Catching Up With the Roamers (part 1)

I've got nine Roaming Penguins stories to post today, so I figured I would break it down into four separate posts. When last we left off, Sidney Penguin was in Germany. A few weeks ago, I got word that he made his way over to Scotland to visit Friend of The Show Gill R.:

I received my Roaming Penguin through the post today and thought you may like to see some pictures. He made it all the way to Perth, Scotland. Sidney Penguin is a great little guy. He has made a friend already which you will see by the pictures.

Meanwhile, Petr Penguin took an educational trip to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh with Friends of The Show Stephanie C. and her son:

Well, today was, I suspected, Petr's last day as an Only Penguin. So I took my son and him to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, one of the nicest botanical gardens around. I didn't get too many good shots, as my camera's been finicky lately, but here are a couple.

Day One Was Fun

I finally started my new job today! It was a day full of meetings, but even so, it was a lot of fun. I think I'm really going to like it there! An added bonus: it's 5:30pm, and I'm already home and in my P.J.s!! NO MORE FIVE O'CLOCK TRAFFIC!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO!!! :D

And finally tonight, we had our first Roaming Penguin land overseas! Marc-Andre Penguin arrived in Duisburg, Germany to visit the home of Friend of The Show Anne H. Her own words explain the photos:

First of all he learned to know some of his new familiy members (pic 01)...

...and became friends with a mascot of my favorite soccer team (pic 02).

On Friday we went cycling and he saw the Regattabahn Duisburg, where several world rowing and canoeing championships took place (pics 03-05).

Afterwards I showed him the stadium of our local soccer team (pic 06).

Today we took a walk through Landschaftspark Nord, which is part of the industrial landscape characteristic of the area I live in (pic 09).

That is AWESOME, Anne!!! I was thrilled to pieces to see the little guy in Europe!

And finally today, Sidney Penguin arrived in Benbrook, Texas, where he met Karen S. and her furry friends. S.P. wrote us to tell us all about it:

Well I made it to my new home and I met my new mommy. She has two black furry things that seem to own the living space. When mommy was talking to me one of them got curious about me and got too close. We will call that one 'Evil Kitty'. 'Evil Kitty' keeps staring at me but mommy has me protected by her side. The other one we'll call 'Good Kitty' let me sit with her and mommy took our picture. She gave me a soft nose kiss and then laid down on the blanket which has a Penguin logo on it. Mommy said they claimed it as their own and she is just lucky to get to use it. 'Evil Kitty' keeps lurking around but mommy said I will be kept in a safe place.

Sidney P. shares a nice blanket with "Good Kitty."

Sidney Penguin had to get on a plane for today's Roaming Penguin installment. Here's what Friend of The Show Sigma956 had to say about S.P.'s first flight:

Sidney Penguin took his first plane ride on 8/30/08 from Pittsburgh to St. Louis (via Chicago). He visited with my mom and step-dad in Cape Girardeau, MO, then went to eat at the infamous Lambert’s Café (Home of the “Throwed Rolls”) in Sikeston, MO, and then back to St. Louis to see my beloved Cardinals in action against the Florida Marlins at Busch Stadium. Sidney had a great time in visiting the “Show-Me-State”.

The first picture is me and Sidney Penguin inside Busch Stadium. The background is the scoreboard that is outside the stadium:

Pens v Jokerit (W 4-1) Exhibition Game

I'm finally contributing to the Roaming Penguins saga again! (Uh, I cut in line - I still have other Roaming Penguins stories from some of our Friends, and I promise I'm going to continue to post them in the order in which I received them.) My best friend Liz, her 4 year old daughter (my Goddaughter) Kayla, and I took Sidney and Mario Penguin to watch my husband play a little hockey last night.

S.P., Snoop, and M.P. seem to be looking in the completely opposite direction of the action on the ice. That's my husband sporting the number 71 in yellow! :)

Here's Kayla squishing Snoopy, Sidney Penguin, and Mario Penguin with love while the teams face off in the background.

Mario, Snoop, and Sidney finally look the right way to catch a glimpse of my husband (he's the one in the yellow jersey closest to us) skating near the blue line.

I have to say that it has been great spending the offseason with you guys. We got a few projects done, had a few laughs, shared some photos, wasted some time, and started the Roaming Penguins project. :) Now I don't know about you, but I'M READY FOR THAT PUCK TO DROP!!! The season begins tomorrow!!!!!!!

Stephanie C., her son, her dad, and none other than Roaming Petr Penguin took a trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium on September 19^th and then to the Pittsburgh Children's Museum on the 20^th for her son's fourth birthday. Stephanie's own words introduce each photo below.

Here are Rachel's own words to tell us about their day together:

Roaming Sidney and the family traveled to Pittsburgh for my brother’s wedding. Friday morning, Sept 19, we took the kids and Sid to the open practice. It was really cool – people were walking up in jerseys, which was fun to see.

Heading in to the arena, which will always be the Civic Arena to me, none other than Ray Shero drove in front of us into the lot. The practice itself was really quiet and it was strange to be in the semi-empty, quiet arena.

Sidney P. watches the Zamboni drive by.

My son, Henry, who is 4 ½ was so excited and shouted “my first hockey game!!” I told him, “you have no idea, honey.” It was also funny to see people eating hot sausage sandwiches and nachos at 9:30 in the morning.

What an awesome day!

I highly recommend getting in to see a practice for anyone who can, because it was really cool. So, I got a few good shots of Sidney inside and one at the new arena construction site.

This is also S.P.'s first trip to the new arena site! :)

(I also got some good Pens gear at the shop in the arena!)

Now we're heading back to Seattle for today's Roaming Penguin story. Recently, Friend of The Show TheNWChica took her friend Max Penguin on a day trip. I'm pretty excited because it marks his first appearance here on TSCS! Here is her account of what they did:

"All strapped in for a day of errands and shopping!" [snoop: See, kids? Even little Penguins need to buckle up!]

"We got hungry, so we stopped for sushi since I know a lot of the Boys love sushi." [snoop: Not to mention it's a real penguin's favorite treat, too!]

Training Camp Is Now Underway

Yesterday when I got home from work, I had two special visitors waiting for me at my house in Tyrone, PA:

Haha, we've finally reached our limit! Google Maps won't let me plot out Sidney Penguin's travels from Nashville to all the towns he has already visited to my town. I haven't figured out how I'm going to handle that in the future, so for now I'm just going to show you his journey from Colorado Springs to Tyrone.

It marks the first appearance for one very special Roaming Penguin:

Sidney Penguin and Mario Penguin (? finally!) found their way to my town!!!

My visitors wanted to meet my dogs. My Golden Retriever, Baylee, is a good boy and obeys my every command, so I trusted him enough to let them get close to him:

Aren't the three of them adorable together? My Greyhounds (Link, Connor, and Logan) really are good boys, too, but for the first 4+ years of their lives, they chased a mechanical lure around a track, and as a result they're conditioned to catch (and potentially destroy) small things so I didn't want to take any chances...

I'm planning to take S.P. and M.P. on a tour of State College some time soon... I've got more Roaming Penguins pictures from several Friends of The Show to share with you later this week. :)

Training Camp Starts Tomorrow

Friend of The Show Daily Su was able to send in another shot of Sidney Penguin in Seattle's Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk. This time, he is posing in front of The Wall of Inspiration:

Apparently a three day walk wasn't enough exercise for Sidney Penguin - over the weekend, he made his way over to Colorado Springs...

...where he joined Friend of The Show Nadia C. and her pal for a hike on a trail that leads up to Pike's Peak:

The trail has an incline that goes from 6200 feet to 8400 feet at a 50 degree angle. In Nadia's words, "It kicks your butt!"

They made it!!! What a GORGEOUS view!

Well, I hope all of you had as wonderful a holiday as I did! :) I honestly didn't intend to go missing for so long, but I had a very full extended weekend of friends, family, and last minute fun to close out the summer. Now I'm relaxed, rested, refreshed, and READY FOR OCTOBER!!

Sidney Penguin must like the northern New York/Canadian border area. His most recent stop was in Welland, Ontario, Canada...

...where he spent a busy couple of days with Friend of The Show Stephanie B. taking road trips to Niagara and Toronto. Once again, I'll let her captions explain each photo:

"This is Sidney P. sitting on a dock of the Welland Recreational Waterway. Until 1970 when the new canal was built, the Recreational Waterway was a main 'highway' between lake Erie and lake Ontario for large ships. Referred to as 'the old canal' by most residents, it is an important part of the city's history, and hence an important place for Sidney P. to visit. (He went in the paddle boat while he was there!)"

We've only got a little over a month left until the puck finally drops on a new season, and if we stick together, we'll make it through... ;) Until then, I've got something for you to help pass the time for today.

We've got a new member of our Roaming Penguins team making his debut on The Show. Petr Penguin left the home of Stephanie S. in Nashville and arrived in Pittsburgh's South Side...

...where he showed up on Stephanie C.'s doorstep. Her captions tell us what Petr Penguin was up to while they visited:

Sidney Penguin is still making his way around North America. (Hahaha, according to Google Maps, he's traveled more than 9,800 miles!) He came back to the East Coast to visit Friend of The Show Carlie D. in North Tonawanda, NY:

Holy gas guzzling, Batman! Check out that cross-country back-track! Sidney Penguin must drive a hybrid.

We've got more Friends in faraway places - Andrea H. sent in this picture all the way from Germany:

Over the weekend, Sidney Penguin continued on in his adventures across North America. He made a long, transatlantic trip from Nova Scotia to Seattle...

...where he met up with good Friend of The Show Daily Su. He alleviated his jet lag with a bottle of Crosby Cabernet and then, well, I'll just let her tell you all about it:

Today was "Take Your Penguin to Work Day". Sidney Penguin went to visit a TV station in Seattle. He liked everything he saw, but loved hanging out with the helicopter the most. He now wants to learn how to be a pilot (our helicopter is called "SkyKing" - our station call letters are KING).
